THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GRANARIES IN GALICIA
Galicia stands out among other regions for several reasons and characteristics. But not only of cathedrals and large monasteries, here all the works of men, even the small ones, are made in stone. Like the granaries that you will find at every step, a typical element of the rural world and that perhaps due to its simplicity and lack of presumption ends up being so beautiful. The most famous would be its breathtaking and intimidating coastline, the beautiful green landscapes and the eternal Camino de Santiago. Among the things to see in Galicia there are also some very interesting architectural objects: the granaries.
These structures are not distinguished by their imposing size or complex and refined design, but by their utility and simplicity. The granaries have been an inseparable part of the culture and life of the Galician people for centuries, and have now become one of the symbols of this beautiful community.
The origin of granaries goes back to the distant past, and it is not possible to determine exactly when they began to be built. The first written information on these types of granaries comes from the 13th century and is a graphic representation in the Cantigas de Santa María, attributed to Alfonso X the Wise.
However, it is quite clear that granaries began to be used in the Galician provinces much earlier. As for its name, it probably comes from the Latin horreum, which designated a building in which the fruits of the field, especially grain, were kept.
Below you will find a list of our favourite granaries that we, Galicia Travels recommend you to visit during your holidays in Galicia.
